South Asian BMI & Ideal Weight Calculator
Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) using the strict WHO Asian thresholds (where overweight starts at 23.0) to get an accurate view of your health risk, calibrated to Sri Lankan Ministry of Health guidelines.

Why Sri Lanka uses lower BMI thresholds
At the same BMI, people of South Asian descent carry more body fat and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease than the European populations the original cut-offs were derived from. The WHO therefore recommends lower action points for Asian populations, and Sri Lankan health guidance follows them.
The practical effect is that the healthy band ends at 22.9 rather than 24.9. A BMI of 24 is inside the normal range on the international scale and above it on this one, which is why an international BMI calculator can give a Sri Lankan reader false reassurance.
| BMI | Category | International equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight | Underweight |
| 18.5 - 22.9 | Normal weight | Normal (to 24.9) |
| 23.0 - 24.9 | Risk to overweight | Still normal |
| 25.0 - 29.9 | Overweight | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obesity | Obesity |
How the healthy weight range is worked out
The range is the BMI formula run backwards. Multiplying 18.5 and 22.9 by your height in metres squared gives the lightest and heaviest weights that fall inside the healthy band for your height.
For someone 1.65 m tall, that is 50.4 kg to 62.3 kg. For someone 1.75 m tall it is 56.7 kg to 70.1 kg. The band widens with height because the formula squares it.
| Height | Healthy range |
|---|---|
| 1.55 m (5 ft 1 in) | 44.4 - 55.0 kg |
| 1.65 m (5 ft 5 in) | 50.4 - 62.3 kg |
| 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in) | 56.7 - 70.1 kg |
| 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) | 63.3 - 78.4 kg |
What BMI does not tell you
BMI is a ratio of weight to height and nothing more. It cannot see where fat sits on the body, and abdominal fat carries more metabolic risk than the same weight distributed elsewhere.
- Waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio add information BMI misses.
- Muscular people are routinely classified as overweight by BMI.
- It is not valid during pregnancy, and children need age-and-sex-specific charts.
- A single reading matters less than the direction of travel over months.
What to check alongside BMI
BMI describes a ratio of weight to height and nothing else, so two people with identical readings can carry very different risk. Waist circumference is the most useful figure to read beside it, because abdominal fat is more strongly associated with cardiometabolic risk than total body mass, and the thresholds recommended for South Asian populations are lower than the international ones.
Blood pressure, fasting glucose, and a lipid profile add far more than a second decimal place on BMI ever will, particularly given the rates of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in Sri Lanka. A BMI inside the healthy band is not evidence that those are fine, which is why screening is recommended on age and risk factors rather than on body mass alone.
Treat the number here as a prompt for a conversation with a clinician rather than a verdict. Where it falls outside the healthy band, what matters next is the pattern of diet, activity, sleep, and family history, none of which a height and a weight can capture.
