How the required score is derived

A module mark is the sum of each component's score multiplied by its weight. Everything except the final examination is already known, so the only unknown is the score on the final, and the equation rearranges to isolate it.

The result can exceed 100, which is the useful part. A required score above 100 means the target is unreachable no matter how the examination goes, and it is better to learn that while there is still time to adjust the target than after results are published.

Check the weights before you trust the number

The answer is only as good as the weights entered, and module handbooks are not always the last word: weights get revised between intakes and announced in class rather than in print.

  • Weights across all components should total 100%.
  • Some modules require a minimum mark on the examination regardless of coursework.
  • Continuous assessment sometimes has its own separate pass condition.
  • Scaling and moderation are applied after this arithmetic, not before.

Deciding where to spend revision time

When several modules are in play at once, the one to prioritise is rarely the one you are most worried about. Work out the required score for each, and the picture usually sorts itself into three groups: modules already safe whatever happens, modules where a realistic exam mark changes the outcome, and modules where the target is out of reach regardless.

The middle group is where revision actually pays. A module needing 62 when you typically score in the sixties is worth more of your week than one needing 95, because the marginal hour changes the result. Running each module through the calculator before you plan the week turns a vague sense of pressure into a short, ordered list.

It is also worth checking the required score for a bare pass alongside the score for your target grade. Knowing that a module is safe at 40 but needs 78 for the grade you wanted lets you protect the pass first and chase the grade with whatever time is left.

What the number cannot account for

The calculation treats the module as a straight weighted average, which is what most module handbooks describe. Many programmes then apply conditions on top: a separate minimum on the examination itself regardless of coursework, a cap on the mark a resit can earn, or scaling and moderation applied across the cohort after marking.

Those adjustments happen after this arithmetic, so a required score of 45 is the mark the weighted average needs, not a guarantee that 45 will pass the module. Where a module carries a separate exam hurdle, clearing the average while falling below the hurdle still fails.

Check the handbook for your module, and ask the lecturer if the weights or conditions were revised after publication. The calculator is a planning aid for how to spend the weeks before the exam, not a prediction of the result you will be awarded.
