How the estimate is built

The calculation is deliberately transparent: litres equal distance divided by kilometres per litre, cost equals litres times price, and the split is that cost divided by the number of people.

For a 240 km round trip in a car returning 12 km/l with fuel at Rs. 340 a litre, that is 20 litres, Rs. 6,800 in total, and Rs. 1,700 each between four people.

Use your own efficiency figure, not the brochure one

Manufacturer fuel-economy figures come from standardised test cycles that bear little resemblance to Sri Lankan driving. Colombo traffic, hill-country gradients, air conditioning, roof loads, and tyre pressure all move real consumption well away from the quoted number.

The reliable method is to fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, and fill again: kilometres travelled divided by litres added is your actual efficiency. Most drivers find it ten to thirty percent below the brochure figure.

  • A fully loaded car with the air conditioning running uses noticeably more.
  • Hill-country routes can cut efficiency by a quarter or more.
  • Fuel prices are revised periodically, so check the current pump price before a long trip.
  • For a shared trip, agree the split before departure rather than at the destination.

When you toggle 'Round Trip', the calculator simply doubles the one-way distance you enter. This saves you the hassle of calculating the total distance manually.

Divide the distance by your vehicle's kilometres per litre to get litres used, then multiply by the price per litre. A 240 km trip in a car doing 12 km/l uses 20 litres; at Rs. 350 a litre that is Rs. 7,000.

The route is roughly 115 km each way, so about 230 km return. A car doing 12 km/l would use around 19 litres for the round trip. Enter your own distance and efficiency for a figure that reflects your vehicle and route.

Your own measured figure, not the manufacturer's. Fill the tank, note the odometer, drive normally, then fill again and divide the distance by the litres it took. Real Sri Lankan conditions - traffic, hills, air conditioning, load - routinely put actual consumption well below the brochure number.

The simplest fair method is to divide the total fuel cost by everyone travelling, including the driver, since the driver is also getting where they are going. If the driver is providing the vehicle, some groups exclude them from the fuel split to account for wear and tear.

No. It covers fuel only. Expressway tolls, parking, and any vehicle wear are separate, and on expressway routes tolls can be a meaningful share of the trip cost - add them to the total before splitting if you want the true per-person figure.

Divide 100 by the figure. A car rated at 8 litres per 100 km does 12.5 km per litre. The two express the same thing inversely, so a lower litres-per-100km number and a higher km-per-litre number both mean a more efficient vehicle.

Pump prices are revised periodically by the fuel retailers, so enter the price you actually paid rather than a remembered figure. Ceypetco publishes its current prices, and using a stale price is the single biggest source of error in a trip estimate.
