How the estimate is built
The calculation is deliberately transparent: litres equal distance divided by kilometres per litre, cost equals litres times price, and the split is that cost divided by the number of people.
For a 240 km round trip in a car returning 12 km/l with fuel at Rs. 340 a litre, that is 20 litres, Rs. 6,800 in total, and Rs. 1,700 each between four people.

Use your own efficiency figure, not the brochure one
Manufacturer fuel-economy figures come from standardised test cycles that bear little resemblance to Sri Lankan driving. Colombo traffic, hill-country gradients, air conditioning, roof loads, and tyre pressure all move real consumption well away from the quoted number.
The reliable method is to fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, and fill again: kilometres travelled divided by litres added is your actual efficiency. Most drivers find it ten to thirty percent below the brochure figure.
- A fully loaded car with the air conditioning running uses noticeably more.
- Hill-country routes can cut efficiency by a quarter or more.
- Fuel prices are revised periodically, so check the current pump price before a long trip.
- For a shared trip, agree the split before departure rather than at the destination.
